Review: Audi E-Tron SUV

The Audi E-Tron SUV is the companies first fully electric production car. The E-tron features an electric motor on each axle. The front motor puts out 125kW of power, while the rear motor produces 140kW. In total, the car operates with about 265kW of power, which is the equivalent of around 350 horsepower.  The driver will be able to activate a “boost mode” that temporarily increases the performance of each motor for a total power output of 300kW. In boost mode, the E-tron can hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. It comes standard with air suspension, 20-inch wheels, LED lighting, seats with built-in heating and cooling, panoramic sunroof, inductive wireless smartphone charging, and more. The E-tron can be optioned up to include Audi’s driver assistance package, massage seats, a heads-up display, a power door closer, among other hi-tech features.

In Europe, the E-Tron won’t have traditional side mirrors. Instead, it will have a camera on each side where mirrors would ordinarily be. The views from those cameras will be displayed on screens inside the vehicle. The Drivers will be able to look at OLED displays embedded on the inside of each door, which are also ringed with lights that can change color based on things like whether there is a car in the E-tron’s blind spots. That system will not be available in the United States because safety regulations here don’t allow for it. Audi executives said they are working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to bring this feature to the American market.

As with other Audi vehicles, the driver will also be able to select different driving modes, from comfortable to sporty, that will alter suspension stiffness, steering responsiveness and how aggressively the SUV accelerates. The SUVs ground clearance is also adjustable by as much as three inches. Buyers will be able to purchase a home charging system and have it installed by Amazon Home Services. The installation can be ordered online. Pricing will vary depending on each homeowner’s needs.

Audi is partnering with Amazon to help ease the process of installing a home charger for the E-tron. Buyers of the all-electric SUV will be offered the option of having Amazon’s Home Services division handle the installation process. The E-Tron will also sport a smart braking system that intelligently blends, on the fly, mechanical braking with regenerative braking (where the electric motors spin backwards, feeding energy back into the battery) which the company says will help optimize energy use during daily driving situations.
