    2017 Ford C-Max Energi: Euro-Designed Plug-In People Hauler

The 2017 Ford C-Max Energi is a mid-sized 5-door hatchback MPV with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It seats five. C-Max is Ford’s first hybrid-only vehicle line. The C-Max Energi has been in the Ford lineup since the 2013 model year. It is available in two trim levels: SE and Titanium. Designed by Ford of Europe, it is manufactured in Michigan for the American market. What follows is a review of a plug-in hybrid with plenty of utility and driver appeal.

The C-Max Energi has a 2.0L Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine, with 141 horsepower channeled through the front wheels via a CVT transmission. The 88 kW electric motor supplements the gas engine, bringing the total output up to 188 horsepower, or 195 when running on a full charge. The battery is a 7.6 kWh lithium-ion, which provides range on electric power only of 21 miles and an EV-only top speed of 85 MPH. A regenerative braking system reclaims energy for the battery whenever the brakes are applied. Charging takes 7 hours on 120V, but only 2.5 hours on 240V. The car’s illuminated charge port lights up by quadrants to indicate the level of charge.

Connectivity features include MyFord® Mobile as standard. Available as both a phone app and a website, MyFord® Mobile lets you monitor and schedule charging for the C-MAX Energi. You can get remote charging status updates, which allow you to check charge levels and available range. It can also be used to locate your vehicle and view nearby public charging stations. You can even use it to estimate the car’s CO2 emissions based on how you drive. SYNC® is standard on SE, with SYNC® 3 and voice-activated navigation with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link® optional. The Titanium has both of these items standard.

The C-Max Energi has an electric-only range of 21 miles. This is suitable for a short commute without charging on the way back, or a longer one with a charger waiting at your workplace. The EV switch lets you lock it in electric mode for as long as the battery lasts. This can also be used for urban areas that may have CO2 restrictions in place and require you to use electric power in the city center. The 21-mile electric range is on par with most plug-in hybrids.

The 2017 Ford C-Max Energi is an established plug-in hybrid player. Its upright 5-door hatchback configuration provides good packaging with lots of space for people and cargo, even though the battery pack takes up some of that cargo space. The C-Max rides and handles well, and is fun to drive. It feels solid and is well-suited to the daily slog.
