2017 Ford Fusion Energi: Proven Plug-In Does The Job Well

The 2017 Ford Fusion Energi is a mid-size sedan with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It has been in the Fusion lineup since 2013. In this review, we will see how it has stood the test of time as it enters its fifth model year.

The Fusion Energi shares its basic platform with other Fusions. It is a stylish, roomy four-door sedan with seating for five. The Energi comes in three trim levels: SE, Titanium, and Platinum.

The Fusion Energi’s drivetrain starts with a 2.0L 141-hp Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine, driving the front wheels. An 88 kW synchronous electric motor is also on board, providing a total output of 188 horsepower, 195 on a full charge. The Energi comes with a 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, which gives it an EV-only range of 21 miles and an EV-only top speed of 85 MPH, but not at the same time! Charging time is 7 hours on 120V, 2.5 hours on 240V. Total range with a full charge and a full tank of gas is 610 miles. The battery does use up some of the trunk space, so check this out when you consider purchasing the Energi.

Connectivity features include MyFord® Mobile on all trim levels, with voice-activated navigation with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link® added on Titanium and Platinum.

Driver assistance technologies available on the Fusion Energi include BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, enhanced active park assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. These are optional on SE and Titanium, standard on Platinum.

With a 21-mile electric range, the Fusion Energi can be driven back and forth to work on a charge if you work ten miles or less from home. Otherwise, you either have to charge it at work or drive it home with some use of the gasoline engine. This is about as good as it gets for most plug-ins, although the Chrysler Pacifica can go 30 miles and the Chevrolet Volt is the leader with 53 miles on electric only.

The 2017 Ford Fusion Energi is a solid choice in the plug-in hybrid field. It is based on a well-designed, well-appointed, fun-to-drive platform. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain is tested and proven. It gets excellent fuel economy when the electric motor is not used. It will provide you with a pleasant driving experience, even when you are not thinking about efficiency!
