Extended e-car range with new battery
Probably the most important innovation is that Jaguar themselves, have created an SUV that flaunts a 500km range per charge. The batteries and technology incorporated, are some of the most innovative piece of hardware to ever grace an Electric Vehicle.
The batteries are placed in pouch cells, and give off less heat than other electric vehicle batteries. Meaning better efficiency, lighter weight and higher density. In fact, this car packs a serious charge at 90 kWh already.
They’ve even incorporated energy saving technology, that draws heat from the surroundings to keep the batteries at the ideal working temperature. Especially in colder conditions. By not using the battery power to do so, this translates in up to 50km more range.
As for charging the car, a 50kW charger can charge the batteries fully in just over 2 hours, 80% charge is possible in 90 minutes. The I-Pace will be able to charge faster, when higher power chargers become available.
How does it drive?
Being a Jaguar, some of the authenticity had to be preserved to give the car its very British feel. A feel that complements Jaguar’s pedigree of high performance.
Though since the I-Pace is Jaguar’s first electric car, this could potentially change things a bit. We’re not entirely sure. Though as speed goes, the I-Pace isn’t slow. Two motors connected to the front and rear wheels make this an All Wheel Drive car. The motors combined produce 400 horsepower and a stunning 700Nm of Torque.
This translates to 0-60mph in just over 4s, and instant power delivery as told by those who’ve test driven the prototype.
An intelligent system controls the torque every wheel gives out. This helps when there’s varying levels of tractions in different conditions. The batteries are positioned as such for a lower centre of gravity, and are balanced to have a perfect 50-50 weight distribution. This makes for much better handling and control compared to any standard SUV.
Inside the I-Pace
Even though the I-Pace is smaller on the outside than the F-Pace, the interior of the car is more spacious due to electric technology freeing up cabin space.
You’ll have 3 screens in the car, a 12” HD Screen right in front of the steering for instruments display such as the speed, range and charge levels. A 12” touchscreen on the centre console that can display directions, and a 5” touchscreen for various entertainment settings.
Guesses are being a Jaguar, the interior will have no compromise in terms of craftsmanship, quality of materials and attention to detail. You will be impressed.
There’s still more to come for sure, as the car will only be released in 2018.
The I-Pace definitely looks like Jaguar’s area of focus at the moment, and for the foreseeable future. The whole automotive industry is starting to become more electrified, and Jaguar is no exception.
