Review: Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid

The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the innovative trendsetter in the Cayenne family. It combines two aspects: sportiness and the future. A parallel plug-in hybrid that boasts plenty of agility. The 2017 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid comes with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and an electric motor. Together, they produce an impressive 416 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 2017 Cayenne E-Hybrid is available in two trims: the base Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the S E-Hybrid Platinum Edition.

Hot New Hybrid from Legendary Carmaker
Cayenne S E-Hybrid Platinum Edition - I test driven this car

Having had the chance to pilot the 2017 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid around the streets of Seattle, I was amazed at how much power Porsche has managed to build into this amazing mid-size SUV. As you might expect when you slide into the driver’s seat, the interior is loaded with a wide range of top-quality materials. The seats are unbelievably comfortable and no matter how tall or short you happen to be, reaching the many controls is easy.

But there is far more to this hot new hybrid from Porsche than comfortable seating and a luxurious and comfortable interior. There is the powerful Audi 3.0-liter supercharged V6 hybrid combo that literally took my breath away when I hit the gas pedal. The gas engine is rated at a full 333 horsepower, but when you add in the 10.8 kW electric motor that puts out an additional 95 hp, you suddenly have access to a massive 416 hp that will literally put you back in the seat when you hit the gas pedal. I couldn’t believe how much the Cayenne Plug-in hybrid puts out.

The Cayenne weighs in at 5,181 pounds complete with the lithium-ion battery pack. However, despite this weight, it goes from 0 to 60 mph in an incredible 5.4 seconds. All of this power is transferred to the ground via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This clutch-style automatic is available whether you are driving on just the gas engine, just the electric motor, or both and puts power out to all four wheels as the Cayenne is an all-wheel drive SUV.
One of my biggest concerns with a plug-in hybrid is how long it will take to charge the batteries. So many of these vehicles seem to have ridiculously long charge times. Not so the 2017 Porsche Cayenne. Using the 3.6 kW onboard charger lets you charge the batteries in 2.7 hours. If you purchase the optional 7.2 kW charger, you can cut this time in half.

Fuel economy ratings are excellent for a mid-size SUV that weighs almost 5,200 pounds. When running o just the gas engine, the Cayenne is rated at 22 mpg combined. But when you factor in the electric motor this goes up to an impressive 46 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). You can drive the Cayenne up to 14 miles on just the electric motor on a full charge. Everything about this amazing SUV screams Porsche.

The Cayenne comes nicely fitted with a wealth of the latest technology, including a 4.8-inch instrument cluster, HD radio, full Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, ready to use navigation that helped me move smoothly around Seattle, which is no mean feat, and full smartphone integration thanks to the Porsche Communication Management System. I have never enjoyed driving an SUV as much as I did the Cayenne, this is one of the most powerful hybrid SUVs on the market and definitely, deserves to be wearing the Porsche badge.
